A mad scientist (Dr. Henry Frankenstein played by Colin Clive) creates a monster (Frankenstein's Monster played by Boris Karloff) using body parts from corpses in this original Frankenstein movie.
- The first director hired for Frankenstein (Robert Florey) wanted Bela Lugosi to play the role of Dr. Frankenstein. Florey's decision was later overruled by Carl Laemmle (The founder of Universal Pictures) and Lugosi was placed in the role of Frankenstein's Monster. (Later Bela Lugosi would be replaced by Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster.)
- Dr. Frankenstein could have ended up being played by Leslie Howard, but director James Whale wanted Colin Clive as Dr. Frankenstein for the original Frankenstein movie.
